I can help!
My tutoring approach is individualized and incorporates multiple learning strategies. As every student is different, I adjust my support to meet each student's needs. These are a few of my many strategies:

-
With teens who need to improve memory skills, I may begin with tasks that build these skills. I use word games such as "I'm going camping and I'm bringing my ..." and creating our own version of the tile-based "memory" game.
-
Many struggling students need to learn how to break information into parts and make those parts learnable.
-
I work with students to help them create their own visuals:
-
index cards with sketches on them, to aid with retaining information
-
larger concept cards showing how things relate to one another
-
flow charts or diagrams, using colors to make relationships clear
-
timelines to remember sequences of events
-
-
-
I help disorganized students develop a system that will help them function better at school. (A system better than binder checks, although I can help with those, too.)
-
1:1 ACT or SAT tutoring with a focus on students needing help and strategies to perform well as they master these tests.
Who benefits from this approach?
-
Visual and hands-on learners.
-
Kinesthetic learners (students who, for example, learn by acting out what they read or by using math manipulatives)
-
Children who can't answer questions on what they just read.
-
Children/teens who don't remember anything they just did yesterday.

Students with special needs benefit from multiple approaches and need more supports in place to function well in the school setting and in standardized tests like the ACT and SAT. With consistent, patient, and creative tutoring even the most disorganized student can become more efficient and get school work turned in on time.
